Media Evaluation
In my magazine front cover and my contents page I used a digital SLR Canon 550D Camera to take my photographs, I used a tripod and three different types of lenses. I used many different techniques such as studio shots I also took photographs outside. I often changed my shutter speed depending on what was happening in the frame. I used many different types and angles of camera shots, for example I used middle shouts and long shots to give my magazine a friendly feel.
In Photoshop I used many different techniques to create my magazine front cover and contents. The tools I used in Photoshop were:
Magic Wand Tool - to get rid of large chunks of background and to get rid of small imperfections on the text.
Brush Tool - to get rid of the shininess on some of the models faces and I also used this to get rid of red eye.
Spot Healing Tool, Healing Tool and Clone Stamp Tool - to get rid of any imperfections on the models faces.
Paint Bucket Tool - to create colour in my callouts to make them stand out.
Eraser Tool - to rub out any of my unwanted background.
Blur Tool - to rub the edges of the image so it blended into my background and the image looked natural.
Horizontal Text Tool - to create text on my contents page.
Eyedropper Tool - to get a colour close to the models skin to clear any imperfections of their faces.
Shape Tool - I used this to make a callout on my front cover so my promotion would stand out.
I also used the internet to get the style font I wanted on my front page I used a website called dafont to create my masthead because Photoshop did not have any graffiti style fonts.
There are all typical codes and conventions of a magazine and I have included these in my work:
With my magazine I wanted to achieve a simple but modern look. A style which would stand out from the magazine rack it would be placed on. I wanted my magazine to be individual, unique because this is how I view my audience and what they would be like.
My target audience is from the age of 13-17, I have chosen this age group because these are the people that go to school. If the age group had been any different then the people wouldn't buy the magazine because they aren't interested in school.
As my target audience is very youthful I feel as though my magazine appeals to them through a variety of ways.
I have used a graffiti style font which is how I imagine my stereotypical target audience would write their name so taking this into account I wrote the masthead and other text in this way to appeal to my target audience.
All my picture feature young people in them, all the models were between the age of 13-17 which is the same as my target audience I feel that if I had put in pictures of people any older, my target audience would not have been able to relate to them also I feel if I have put picture of anyone younger then it would have made my magazine childish and my audience would not have wanted to read it and it would appeal more to younger people.
I have put little doodles on my contents page because this is linked my target audience and is perhaps what they would do in lessons that they don't enjoy. So this would appeal to them and my audience would be able to relate to them.
I feel that the weaknesses of my magazine front cover is that the callout on the bottom of my contents page does not attract enough attention of the reader also some of my fonts on the front cover don't stand out as much as I hope they would and the text is lost into the background.
If I was to do my contents page again I would have more of a variety of angles in my photographs because most of my photos are level and I would slightly rotate my images more so they stood out more also I would change the size of my text to help the audience denote which stories were the main ones.
I think the strengths of my front cover are that is has a background instead of having a studio background this makes my magazine more realistic and makes it seem more like a school magazine. Another strength of my front cover is that it has many different colours so it appeals to most people in my target audience also I have many types of fonts which makes it more appealing.
A strength of my contents page is that it has got graffiti style font which is different from all the professional magazines I have seen also another strength of my contents page is the photo corners on my pictures this make it feel a bit like a scrap book and give it a more personal feel.

My Final Contents Page
This is my final contents page:
I have used different coloured fonts to make my text stand out, but I have also used it to make my stories easier to read.
I have put little doodle on my contents page to make it more appealing to the younger end of my target audience also this is the kind of drawing that they would do if the were bored.
I have used a callout in my contents page to attract attention to the promotional story.
My colour scheme is the same through my contents page I have done this so you won't get distracted by the colour you will just see the writing and the stories which are the selling point of the magazine, but I have use colour to make the magazine look good and not a boring black and white scheme because this would not appeal to my target audience.
All the image I have chosen to use relate to the magazine stories or my target audience in some way.
I have used a graffiti style font because this would appeal to my target audience an this also maybe how the would write in bold and it would be the font that they would chose.
Whenever I came up with an idea for my magazine I would ask the question how would my typical target audience do it? Then I would go on to incorporate how I think they would do it into my idea because the I know it would appeal to them.

Progression of my contents page
Here are all the images I didn't use in my contents page:
I didn't use this image because it was the wrong size, also it wasn't really related to any of my stories.
I wanted to use this picture because I though it looked really good, but in the end I didn't use it because it didn't really relate to my magazine.
Next these are two pictures I did use in my magazine and reasons why:
I used this picture because it related to one of my stories (Your Hobbies) and also as it is a picture of cars and cars racing stereotypically it would appeal to the male side of my target audience and it would interest them in to reading the magazine.
This is another photo I used in my magazine:
I used this picture because it shows a younger person, this would appeal to them more, I did this because most of the people in my magazine photos are Sixth Form, even though it would be a Sixth Form Issue I wouldn't want to lose my regular readers.

Mock Up (practice contents page)
This is the magazine I used to create my first practice of a contents page:
I like how the picture is on the left and the writing is on the right in a column so I emulated this:

Emulations for Contents Page
My inspiration for my contents page came from the magazine Prima.
Here are to examples:
The things I like about this magazine is:
The layout - what I like about the lay out it that it is all located to one side of the page I think this looks sophisticated. It also makes it easy to read.
The colours - Prima uses alternating colours this is good on a practical level, as the text is so close together it would be easy to get on line mixed up with another so by using different colours it makes it easy to see what page number belongs to what story. I also like the colour because it makes the magazine look more appealing.
The picture - what I like about the pictures is where the are laid out, they are all opposite the writing this gives a very scrapbook feel which I'd like to incorporate into my magazine. In addition I like how they have put page numbers and captions onto the pictures so you can see which picture relates to which story.
This is the contents page of Shout:
What I am going to emulate from shout is the fact that the contents page is only on one of the pages, Shout is a good example to use because its target audience is very nearly the same as mine so if I am to emulate it I would hopefully have the same effect.

My Final Magazine Front Cover
This is my final magazine front cover:
This is my final magazine front cover, I changed my font to a more graffiti style font because I feel that this would appeal to my target audience more. I also made a shadow behind the masthead as I wanted it to jump out off the page.
I used many different colored fonts to make each different puff or cover line look separate from the others also I used a different range of size and fonts to show the importance and the promotional value of the stories.
I have also used a callout; this is to draw the readers attention to the promotion.
I have also included a:
Website address
Issue number
Price
Date and
Barcode
which are all typical conventions of a professional magazine.
My Progression with my Magazine Front Cover
This is the original image I used for my magazine front cover:
What I did to edit this:
Cropped
Rubbed out the background
Upped the contrast
Slightly changed the brightness (increased)
Blurred the outside of the girls
Used the morph and spot tool to remove any flaws from their skin (faces and arms)
This is a picture of my main image after I had edited it (cropped, blurred, removed some flaws)
This is an image of my background:
I edited this picture by:
cropping it
I increased the contrast/brightness
I chose to use this background because I didn't what to have a studio feel to my magazine, because I want my audience to be able to relate to the magazine and recognise themselves in it (Katz and Bloomers Uses and Gratifications Theory) so by using a photograph of the school grounds I feel as if I have met this goal.
This is my first draft of my magazine:
I didn't like this because nothing on the magazine really stood out also none of the fonts were different so the magazine looked very borning. In addition the colour scheme I selected wasn't interesting and would make you want to read it of even attract your attention.
This is my second draft of my school magazine:
The difference between this and my first draft is that I changed the colour of my title, which did make my magazine stand out more but it still wasn't the image I had in my head.
This is my final draft magazine:
I chose not to have this as my final magazine front covers because some of the puffs and coverlines did not stand out like it wanted them too.

Front Cover Magazine Pictures
This was a image I was going to use but it didn't look like any of the prossesional magazine I had seen:
What I like about this picture is that it convays ideas of a good friendship.
In addition this is also the right size picture for a magazine front cover
This is another picture I wanted to use for my magazine front cover:
I was going to use this because it had the right number of people in it
That they were looking directly at the camera
I ended up not using because it was not the right shape for a magazine front cover
This is the picture I used for my front cover:
I used this because:
It had a feel of friendship and communtiy
The people in the picture look very happy and it would cheer them
After I cropped it it was magazine shape.
It was my favorite picture.

Emulated Front Covers
My Inspiration for my School Magazine Front Cover came from these following professional magazines:
What I like about the SHOUT front cover was that:
The masthead stands out at you
The main story go over the top of the main image
The way that the thing you could WIN is in a callout circle
From this magazine what I am going to incorporate is:
The puffs and cover stories are going over the main image
Use of different colours
And
Call outs to get the readers attention
What I like about this magazine:
The fact that there is more than just one person in the front cover
The masthead is caps locks so it stands out a lot
I also like how they have used a realistic, scenic background
From this magazine what I'm going to incorporate is:
How there is more than one person in the shot to give the magazine more of community feel
Having masthead in a bold colour and font
and
by using an interesting, scenic background of a school location.
Thing I like about this magazine:
I like that the masthead is in a bold font and that it is behind the head of the cover star suggesting people don't need to read the name because they are regular reader.
I also like how COSMOPOLITAN uses only three colours for the typography's colour.
I also like the face that the bestselling stories are in the boldest and brightest fonts.
What I'm going to incorporate in my magazine:
If I was to put my magazine into production then my main audience would be regular readers so I would have the idea of this magazine
I will also change the size, colour and layout of the font to make the audience know what stories are important and to highlight on the selling points.
I am going to keep a house style in my contents page and my front cover because then it looks more professional.

My Magazine Mock-Ups
This is the mock up of my front cover of the school magazine and how I hope it will roughly look.
This is my mock up of my contents page this is how it will roughly look.

Photoshop Practice
I have been doing some photoshop practice for my front cover.
This is the image I started off with:
This is the image I started off with:
I opened up photoshop and then rubbed out the background so only Ben was in the picture, not any of the rocks. I used the 'Eraser Tool' of this. I did this so I could put him on a different background. Before I rubbed away the background I cropped the image, this made it easier because I had less of the background to rub away.
As Ben's leg is covered by the rock when I rubbed out the background part of his leg looked like it had been rubbed off, to solve this I used the 'Clone Stamp Tool' to duplicate parts of his leg which was already there to fill in the rest of his leg to make his leg look normal.
This is the image when I had cropped, clone stamped and erased the background.
I then went on and used the 'Blur Tool' I did this because Ben look very sharp around the edge and he didn't blend into the background, by doing this it made a drastic improvement to the realism of the picture.
Next I increased the contrast of the image, this made the image look better, I also increased the brightness. By increasing both the contrast and the brightness made the image look a lot more interesting and lively.
This is the image when I had cropped, clone stamped, erased the background, blurred & increase the brightness and contrast.
My Magazine Fonts
I like this font for my masthead but when I put it on my back ground it didn’t show up very well, and I wanted my title to be really bold and to stand out. I am also putting my masthead at the top of my magazine so when you look on a magazine rack it catches your eye straight away.
I have also used slang for my magazine because it is how my target audiences would typically speak and I would like my audience to be able to relate to my magazine. My target audience is secondary school students from about 13-17 from both genres, I wanted this target audience because my magazine is a school magazine and people not in school would probably not want to read it.
This is the font I ended up using, this font is sans-serif I choose to use this because it is a lot less formal and a lot more modern then sans font and I believe that my target audience would prefer this and choose this font them selves so it appeals to them more.
To begin with I tried using the font in black but it didn’t show up very well on my back ground so I choose a different colour so it stood out better.
Magazine Front Covers
Photography - There is a single cover image of Miley. She is looking straight at the audience which makes it direct address. Easy to do; have a friend dress up in a white top in front of a white screen (or photoshop her out and put her of the white back ground, and remove all blemishes)
What I Like About It - I like that the the picture on the magazine is fairly plain, that also makes the writing stand out and look interesting
Photography - It is a picture of a colourful bird. I would take a picture of a bird and then photoshop the bird out of the picture and cut it out and then put it on a green background.
What I like About It - I don’t really like this magazine because nothing really stands out all the font is really small so it does not stand out. I think it is borning.
Photography - There is a picture of a man looking angry which suggest his produces rock music. We could make this image by cutting a friend looking anrgy of an image and the putting them on the red background.
What I like about it - I like this because it has a bold statement with all the red of the back ground and the black making it stand out. I like the studio photography.
Photography - This is a controted picture it make all the cars look flawless this is done by lighting. You’d take a picture of the car and then put it on a different background.
What I Like - What I like about this picture is that it it has a very plain background which makes the car stand out more. In additition I like that the font is very bold and in stand out colours so you can notice straight way with out having to look to far
Photography - In this magazine there is not really a main image but lots little ones. Most of the images have been photoshop to up the contrast also the picture have been cropped and tilted.
