The Suspect Storyboard - Draft

This is the first attempt at our Preliminary task storyboard – The Suspect. In the final storyboard there will be information of sound and edits, making it more detailed and helpful, also the shots will be more accurate.

When storyboarding I found this sight very useful:

This draft has taught me the do's and don't of storyboarding.

Examples of Storyboards...

These are some examples of film storyboards, some are professional and some are created by amateurs.
This is a storyboard from Harry Potter, it is very detailed and clearly has been create by a storyboard artist. There is also a video of the storyboard artist, Jim Cornish, talking about his work on Harry Potter.

Our storyboard won't look this good as we don't have the time and resources however it is the same concept and basic conventions.

This is an amateur storyboard, this is more that standard the ours will turn out to be.

How To Storyboard...

These are two videos I found useful on YouTube, they teach you the basics of storyboarding.

Being able to draw when storyboarding is not a necessity, stick figures are fine, the point of a storyboard is to give the cast and crew an idea of what shots are needed. It is also useful for the editor in post-production as they know in what order the shots shot go in. Storyboarding is simple but it need to be done!
In addition to storyboards these are the other main things need to be done in pre-production:
  • Script
  • Budget
  • Script Breakdown
  • Casting
  • Shot List
  • Line the Script
  • Time the Script
  • Shooting Schedule

JKC Productions...

For our preliminary task we had to come up with a production company name - JKC Productions.

Our task was to:

Film and Edit a sequence in which:

  • A character opens a door, crosses a room and sits down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.
  • This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.
  • Try and make this interesting!

We have started to use techinical skills by shooting footage to make examples of framing and movement. We have also editted these together in a linear sequence.

These were the ideas we had:

We decided to persue with the idea of a police officer and detective interview with a suspect.

    Shot Composition and Camera Movement...

This is a video we made to test our technical skills, personally the most important thing I took from this was don't be lazy USE A TRIPOD! The crash zoom and slow zoom look rubbish because I did it hand held.
I now release the importance of find suitable things to use for camera movement so that I can achieve the best shot possible for example for the tracking we would ideally use tracks but the school doesn't have them so we could used something like a skateboard or a desk chair although this may not look very professional when we are filming it will help us get a more professional standard shot.
Finally, I have learnt that when filming outdoors you have to keep a keen I on the brightness and lighting of the shot as when editing I found that some shots were darker than the others.

    First Lesson Of Year Thirteen...

This slide is to help us when we start to create our briefs. This is the brief options that we are considering:
    1. A promotional package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
    • A website homepage for a band
    • A cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD / DVD package)
    • A magazine advertisement of the digipak (CD / DVD package)
    10. A short film in it entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animation or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:
    • A poster for the film
    • A radio trailer for the film
    • A film magazine review page featuring the film

    We’ve Started A2 Media...

We've now started A2 Media this was the PowerPoint from our first lesson keeping us up-to-date with what is expected of us and what we need to create.
