This is another video I found useful as it informs you of the most commonly made mistakes in script writing, this helps me know what to avoid doing.
Typical a script is separated into three parts.
Part 1 – introduces the characters & conflict
Part 2 – climax is at the end of part 2, build up for climax, build up of central character, tend to be the longest part
Part 3 – resolution
Films usual have to be in chronological order but there are some exceptions like Inception.
Writing / Dialogue should not be on the nose – something someone wouldn't say in real life.
Another site I have found useful is BBC Writers Room.
Some thoughts on dialogue:
- Natural speech is often ungrammatical characters don't have to talk in sentences
- People often interrupt each other
- People digress in the middle of making a point
- People use very few adjectives in speech. Speech is NOT planned!
- Object in action – can add dialogue
- Avoid making your characters sound the same
- Stage directions – replace speech with them
- PAUSE or SILENCE can be useful
- Dialogue is both verbal and nonverbal – how the two interplay determines the shape and rhythm of each scene
- Strive to put as much between the lines as possible
- SHOW NOT TELL
